Filmmaking Production

What format would you like to shoot on?

  1. FILM (or I’d like to shoot on film but I think I can’t afford it)
  2. HD (and its associates: DVCPRO HD, HDV, HDCAM, etc)
  3. 24P DV (Panasonic SDX900, DVX100(a), Canon XL2)

FAQ: Hey, but what if I want to shoot my movie on VHS-C???

Answer: Don’t.

FAQ: Hey, I'm shooting a documentary and I want it to have that interlaced video look, but I want the video quality to look good!

Answer: find an old Betacam or buy a Sony PD-170

FAQ: Hey, if you’re so smart why haven’t you mentioned shooting in Raw 4:4:4 data?

Answer: because that format is still unpractical to rent, buy, edit with and just about everything else unless you happen to be financed by a Hollywood studio.

AUDIO

The best option is to hire a location sound person who has their own gear.

However, if you plan to have someone new do it, you're better off buying (or maybe renting) sound gear.

Your first question is will I be using Double System Sound or Single System Sound?

DOUBLE SYSTEM SOUND PACKAGE: (recording sound separate from the picture… or recording a back-up sound track)

  1. TASCAM HD P2 Flash Recorder - $1000
  2. Or Tascam DA-P1 DAT Recorder - $2100
  3. Clapper Slate ($79) or SMPTE Time Code Slate ($1295)
  4. Sennheiser Me66/k6 Combo, with shock mount and
  5. wind cover - $600
  6. Gitzo Boom Pole - $100-$300
  7. Extra XLR Cables - $20-$50
  8. Samson Mixpad Portable Mixer - $250
  9. a Good pair of headphones - $25-$100

For a SINGLE SYSTEM Package, use the above guidelines, but remove #1.

LIGHTING/ RIGGING/ GRIP

After you hire your DP (Director of Photography), youll discuss what type of lighting that you’re going to require. Your DP will probably make requests that your budget cannot handle. Lighting is expensive and a lot of filmmakers choose to rent instead of buy.

  1. If you rent, you should visit MPS Studios in Dallas. www.mpsfilm.com they have massive warehouses filled with movie lights exclusively for rental. They also have grip trucks and Dolly’s.
  2. If you buy, you'll want to consider a nice kit such as ones by Strand Lighting, Arri or Lowel. You'll want to consider a mixture of Tungsten Fresnels and also possibly some Fluorescent fixtures from KINO or Lowel

Basic Package #1 -

  • STRAND Bambino Quick Kit -$2900
  • 3 – 650W lights w/ stands
  • 1 – 1000w light w/ Chimera Softbox
  • scrims, lamps, rolling case

Basic Package #2 –

  • 4 -Bank Lowell Fluorescent CaseLight – $1000
  • 2 –Bank Lowell Fluorescent Caselight - $800
  • Arri-lite 600 3-light Kit - $1650

OTHER Misc LIGHTING NEEDS:

  • Matthews C-Stands W/ Gobo Head
  • Mounts, AppleBoxes, Clamps
  • Misc Gels, Diffusion, Flags, Nets, Cookies (hint: some DP’s like to make their own cookies!)
  • C-47’s (clothes pins)
  • Grip Gloves, Tools… (get your Grips to bring their own)

HINT: If you rent a grip truck… it’ll already be filled with Flags, Nets, C-Stands, Mounts, Appleboxes and expendables.

If you’re confused about this terminology, read THE GRIP BOOK, by Michael Uva

If you want some nice camera moves, you'll want to rent a FISHER 10 or 11. You cannot physically own one of these, you have to rent it or lease it.

Other options are to buy an inexpensive dolly like such made by Matthews  or IndieDolly .

Other options for camera movement are body rigs from Glidecam or Steadicam. Again, you're best bet here is to hire an operator with his own rig.

Other options are Cranes and jibs which are also available from us through Glidecam or Sachtler. For a more heavy duty crane or jib, you'll want to rent from MPS.
