Filmmaking - Production - Shooting in 24P DV

If you’ve chosen this route, its probably because you’ve decided to purchase a camera or because you’ve found a DP with his own 24P DV Package. There is a certain collateral confidence plan with buying your own camera, because even if your movie sucks, you’ll still have a fancy video camera to show for it!

Panasonic AG-DVX100B – This breakthrough camera was the first DV25 camera to shoot in true 24 progressive mode. It can also do a reverse telecine in camera, which is necessary for 24 frame NLE Timelines and eventual 35mm output. It has become very popular because of its "almost-but-not-quite-but-just-close-enough-for-$3500-Film-Look"

Canon XL2 – Canon jumped on the 24P bandwagon with the much anticipated XL2 at a time when most were expecting a 24P HDV camera from Canon. The XL2 comes at the higher price tag than the DVX100A, but it adds the possibility of using interchangeable video lens as well as 35mm film lenses with the PL Adapter.

Panasonic SDX900 – This ENG-looking shoulder-cam from Panasonic shoots in DVCPRO-50 mode at 24P, which produces an image somewhere of quality somewhere in between the AG-DVX100B and the Varicam. The camera lists for $27K w/o a lens or viewfinder, so this would normally be a rental. Check local rates.
