Filmmaking - Production - HD

So, you’ve decided to shoot HD. Now what? You’ll need to pick your HD flavor, your post-production process( discussed in the Post-Production section and your Master format.

HDCAM – This is Sony’s format. If you’re shooting a movie, you're going to be shooting with the Sony "Cine-Alta" HDW-F900 CineAlta. Check around for rental rates.

You’ll typically need a VTR and an NLE with HD-SDI inputs and outputs to work with this format.

DVCPRO HD – This is Panasonic’s format. AKA DVCPRO100, as it runs at 100mb/s. This format is natively compressed into the DVCPRO HD codec and is able to be transferred natively via Firewire 400 to Final Cut Studio and Avid Xpress Pro. You’ll be shooting with the Panasonic Varicam to use this format, and keep in mind that the Varicam shoots 720P only… not 1080. Your 720P master can be upconverted to 1080 with Panasonic’s expensive D5-HD format.

Your other option is the PANASONIC HVX-200, which mimics the features of the Varicam while using P2 Media.  Additional features include the ability to shoot in 1080i & 1080P.

HDV – This is a newer format that has been embraced by JVC and Sony with lower cost HD Cameras. JVC JY-HD10 was the first entry, shooting 720 lines of resolution onto a mini-DV tape in an MPEG-2 codec. Sony now has 3 new HDV cameras which both shoot 1080 using the same MPEG-2 codec.

JVC's HD110 is optimized for low -budget Digital Cinematography with its native 720P 24P setting and interchangeable lenses.

Canon's XL-H1 uses the HDV standard to shoot in 1080i with 24F and 30F modes. It also includes pro-features like Genlock, and Time Code Ins and outs for synching multiple cameras together. You can also get uncompressed 1080i 4:2:2 direct from the HD-SDI output.
